Artists: Alex Alva, with Philip Wise and the New Wookiee Workshop
TDH: Tell us a bit about yourself.
Alva: I have been an artist for 15 years and graduated from the art institute in Dallas. For the past ten years, I have been painting Boba Fett helmets here at the Dented Helmet. I am now working free-lance with Sideshow Collectibles, which is really exciting!
TDH: What drew you to the As You Wish Helmet Project?
Alva: Having the opportunity to be involved in a project that combines my passion for Iron Man and Boba Fett was hard to pass up, but the most important thing is Make-A-Wish and the work they do. It is so important, and to be able to contribute to them is an honor.
TDH: What was your inspiration for the Iron Fett helmet?
Alva: Obviously, Iron Man was the inspiration, but the real inspiration came from meeting Stan Lee at Comic Con in Dallas. I am a huge Spider-Man fan, but in talking with Stan and listening to his passion for Iron Man and his excitement about the Avengers movie, I was inspired to focus on Iron Man more than Spider-Man.
TDH: Tell us a little about the process of creating this helmet.
Alva: We started with a Sideshow Collectibles Iron Man bust, and used it for reference to sculpt the faceplate, then we had to widen the face dramatically to make it fit the Boba Fett helmet. Coming from a background here at the Dented Helmet where accuracy is everything, it was hard to keep pulling back and not just turning this into an Iron Man helmet, but to leave indicators of Boba Fett in the helmet.
Philip Wise and the New Wookiee workshop were also a huge help. Philip created all the electronic components for the eyes and keyslot areas and also created the Stark Industries themed custom base.
TDH: Now that the helmet is finished, if there is one thing you could change or do differently, what would it be?
Alva: I think I would paint the helmet using Boba Fett's colors just to reinforce the idea that this is a mashup between Fett and Iron Man.
TDH: With your helmet finished, what is your next project?
Alva: I am currently finishing up painting the fullsize Boba Fett masters for Sideshow Collectibles and then it is on to more projects!
